    It's April Fool's Day, and you are stuck at home !

    Well, why not pull a prank on your mother, or your father, sister(s) and brother(s) ?!

     

    THE MAGICAL BANANA

    You need :
    April Fool's Day pranks
    - a banana
    - a toothpick

    1- Stick a toothpick into a banana somewhere along a seam. Rotate the toothpick left and right inside the banana, cutting all the way through the fruit, but not through the peel. Try to keep the hole as small as possible.

    2- Take the toothpick out and repeat at another spot on the banana. Keep making internal slices until you have at least five or six.

    3- Now offer the banana to your little brother or sister, or to your parents. When they peel the banana, they will be VERY surprised to find that it is already sliced!

    Vocabulary :

    TOOTHPICK : cure-dent INSIDE : à l'intérieur de
    CUT : couper, découper PEEL : peau (fruit, légume)  /  (verbe) : peler, éplucher
    SLICE : tranche   /   (verbe) : couper en tranches AT LEAST : au moins
    ALREADY : déjà STICK : planter, enfoncer
    PULL A PRANK (on) = faire une farce (à) BE STUCK AT HOME : être coincé à la maison

    Vocabulary

     

    A LOT (adverbe) = beaucoup

    (en fin de proposition verbale)

     I sleep a lot these days (je dors beaucoup ces jours-ci)
     My mother watches TV a lot (ma mère regarde beaucoup la télé)

     Note : tu remarques que la place de "beaucoup" (après le verbe en français) et de "a lot" (après la  proposition verbale en anglais) n'est pas tout à fait la même. Cela est dû à une règle importante : en anglais, le verbe et son complément restent ensemble.

    NEED + groupe nominal = avoir besoin de

    NEED TO + BV
    = avoir besoin de + infinitif

     I need more time to finish this exercise (j'ai besoin de plus de temps pour finir cet exercice)
     Do you need help ? (avez-vous besoin d'aide ?)
     The city will need extra tests before Easter. (la ville aura besoin de tests supplémentaires avant Pâques)

     I need to exercise (j'ai besoin de faire de l'exercice)
     How often do you need to walk your dog ? (à quelle fréquence as-tu besoin de sortir ton chien ?)
     The city will need to run more tests (la ville aura besoin de pratiquer plus de tests)

     Note : le verbe NEED TO + BV est très souvent utilisé comme forme polie pour indiquer une obligation.
     You need to respect the lockdown = vous devez respecter le confinement
    RESTLESS (adjectif)= agité, en ébullition, fébrile, sans repos, privé de repos

     Why are you so restless, what's wrong ? (pourquoi es-tu si agité(e), qu'est-ce qui ne va pas ?)
     I've spent a restless night, I'm exhausted. (J'ai passé une nuit agitée, je suis exténué(e).)

     Note : cet adjectif est composé du nom REST (repos) et du suffixe privatif LESS (sans) > sans repos
    PACE (verbe) = arpenter, faire les cent pas  Mum paced outside, waiting for Dad to come back from work (Maman faisait les cent pas dehors à attendre que Papa revienne du travail)

    On March 24th, the Governor of Texas said grandparents would be willing to die in order to save the economy for their grandchildren.

    If shops and businesses shut down for three months, the whole economy would collapse. The Governor thinks it would be better to keep on living as usual and yes, this would mean that many old people would get infected and die, but then the economy would be safe.

    What do you think of this ?

     

     

    Vocabulary
    * (be) willing (to) = (être) disposé / prêt (à + verbe)
    would + verbe = exprime un conditionnel
    > I would be willing to help farmers = je serais prêt(e) à aider les agriculteurs

    * in order to = afin de (+ verbe) / permet d'exprimer le but
    > I'd be willing to help farmers in order to maintain the agricultural production
    = je serais prêt(e) à aider les agriculteurs afin de maintenir la production agricole.

    * shut down = fermer (définitivement) / mettre la clé sous la porte

    * collapse = s'effondrer

    * keep on (+ verbe -ing) = continuer à (+ verbe)
    > The crowd  kept on dancing despite the rain = la foule continua de danser malgré la pluie

    * safe = en sécurité / protégé(e)
